The pain came before, not during

A tooth needs a root canal when decay or a crack lets infection reach the nerve. That infection — the throbbing, the sensitivity, the sleepless night — is the painful part. Treatment is what ends it. During the procedure the tooth is completely anaesthetised; most patients tell us afterwards it felt like a long filling.

What the appointment looks like

After numbing, a small opening is made in the tooth. The infected tissue is removed and the canals inside the root are cleaned and shaped — this is where rotary endodontics changed everything. What once took multiple slow sittings with hand files is now precise, quiet, and fast. The cleaned canals are sealed, and the tooth is closed with a filling.

Most cases at our clinic finish in one or two sittings of 45–90 minutes. Complex anatomy or a severe infection sometimes needs a third; you’ll know from your plan, not as a surprise.

After the anaesthesia wears off

Mild soreness for two or three days is normal and manageable with routine medication. Chew on the other side until the permanent restoration is placed. Back teeth almost always need a crown afterwards — a root-treated tooth is more brittle, and the crown is what lets it work hard for years.

The alternative is worth naming

The only real alternative to a needed root canal is extraction — and then a bridge or implant to fill the gap. Keeping your natural tooth is nearly always the better first choice when the tooth is saveable. That’s the honest comparison, and it’s the one we’ll walk through with your X-ray in front of you.
